Description

Penelope's nursery is calming and cozy in soft tones of grays and yellows, yet the woodland fairy tale elements make it an inspiring space that will encourage her to dream and use her imagination. A combination of new objects, like her gray suede rocker and white jenny lind crib, combine with old heirlooms and found objects, like her antique bird cage and yellow vanity, to create a timeless and comfortable feel.

Design Inspiration

Many pieces inspired me while completing this project. As I found objects that I was drawn to at art shows and antique shops, the nursery just sort of developed into a woodland fairy tale theme.

Decorating Style

Eclectic- I like to mix old and new pieces together to create a room that feels as though it has evolved over time.

Project Details

  • yellow furniture: antique pieces found at flea markets and garage sales and repainted
  • artwork: block prints, illustrations from old children's books
  • picnic baskets repurposed to hold blankets, books and toys

Favorite Items

Penny's sheepskin rug. It is so luxuriously soft, and is the perfect place for us to play and read together before bedtime.

Advice

Don't go and buy a set of furniture and decor items from the same big store. Find pieces from various places that are different but still work well together. Don't be afraid to buy a piece of furniture that has seen better days- a coat of paint works wonders! Also, peruse all sorts of places (etsy, amazon, flea markets, garage sales), and buy items that you are attracted to. Think outside the box- a picnic basket is a great way to store extra blankets!
